Grab food with life-size action figures at Say Cheese Pizza Co. and Comic Book Cafe in Grand Island!
It's probably the only place in WNY where you can eat lunch or dinner with almost 100 Avengers, Justice Leaguers, and villains staring right at you.
The dynamic shop began as a small takeout and pizza delivery before morphing into a superhero destination in 2004. Say Cheese then expanded in 2006, 2008, and 2010, adding more tables, extending the bar, and creating a game room.
Owner Kevin Slachciak credited the cool idea to what he calls a "pivotal moment" in his life.
"So when I was about six years old, I got my first comics. I remember that moment so vividly. I thought it was an exciting opportunity to try to get other people interested in my passion," said Slachciak.
While Say Cheese is widely known for their life-size statues, they are also known for their Pizzasauraus Rex Challenge.
The challenge is to eat four pounds of food --
- half a medium cheese and pepperoni pizza
- a pound of ribeye steak with cheese, onions, and peppers
- a pound of hot, spicy French fries
- and topped with a garlic bread crust -- in 45 minutes.
According to Slachciak, nearly 800 people haven taken on the challenge, but only nine people have finished it. The record time so far: 19 minutes.
Say Cheese is also a great place for the little ones to make lasting memories.
"The kids go crazy when they see these statues. And the one kid climbs to the top of the Thor statue, and the whole thing comes toppling down. That was a scary moment. But everything worked out fine." he said.
