A two-alarm barn fire in the Town of Darien left several animals dead Saturday night. Multiple fire companies were called to the scene on Simonds Road to battle the blaze.

According to Darien Fire Chief Jeff Luker, there was a source of heat in the old, two-story barn, but it is unclear if that is what caused the fire.

"The homeowners were home," confirmed Luker. "They had just checked on them a while before. When they came back out to check on them again, before going to bed, when they opened up the door they found the fire."

He added that the animals that died included some horses, cows, and small family pets.
