Applying for jobs through Facebook

Posted

Facebook is making it easier for its 1.2 billion daily users to find a job.

On Thursday, the social media giant rolled out its new jobs feature. It allows employers and companies to post job openings. Facebook users can apply for the local jobs and make contact with the recruiters directly through Facebook.

Demone Smith, with The Buffalo Employment and Training Center, thinks it's a great idea. However, he worries it could keep people who share too-much or those who spill their emotions online from getting opportunities.

"If you don't want things that you don't want you mother to see don't put it on your Facebook account," Smith said.

Cheyanne Smith, a junior biology major at Buffalo State College, believes the new feature could help her when she starts her career.

"Now the employers are meeting us halfway to provide these jobs and opportunities for us," Cheyanne Smith said.

Although, she worries about hackers stealing personal information. Jessie Lombardo with Buffalo State College's Career Development Center has the same concern. Lombardo also worries about how Facebook Jobs could be tricky for some.

"In Messanger, you used to communicate in text speak, quick short sentences, or emojis. But you have to be reminded that when it comes to communicating with an employer it doesn't matter what platform you're using, you have to be formal," Lombardo said.

Facebook is hoping to capitalize on clientele that LinkedIn doesn't. The company said it wants to help lower-skilled workers and people who aren't actively looking for a job. Facebook is expected to add more detailed features to its Jobs Post over time.
