Buffalo State is bursting with new students. 2,000 more students applied to the college this year versus last, thanks in part to the new excelsior scholarship program, which pays for tuition for eligible students.

“It means a lot because I actually don't have to pay as much as I was supposed to pay,” Asatta Bradford, Buffalo State Freshman who qualified for the excelsior scholarship.

Buffalo State President, Katherine Conway-Turner, says hundreds of students applied for the scholarship.

“We know it has created a great buzz throughout the state of New York. and so people who maybe have thought education was not affordable -- now  realize now it is,” Conway-Turner said.

Conway-Turner says Buffalo State has been preparing for the incoming class for months and today is the day the students are finally moving in.

Over 17-hundred freshman and 800 transfer students  will be moving in at Buffalo State. The Class of 2021 is the third-largest group of incoming freshmen the university has seen over the past 25 years.

“I think there is a lot of buzz around the importance of higher education that as you know buffalo is on fire. There's been lots and lots of changes in buffalo and you've seen lots of growth and with growth comes opportunities for our students and our community” Conway-Turner said.
