A Chautauqua County woman is dead after a hunter accidentally shot her Wednesday evening while walking her dogs, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies say the hunter believed he saw a deer in a field, near Armenian Road in the Town of Sherman, and fired a shot.

The man told deputies that he heard a scream and immediately went over the the area.

He found 43-year-old Rosemary Billquist with a single gunshot wound and called deputies. He also applied pressure to the wound until EMS arrived.

Billquist was taken to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she died from her injuries.

Investigators say the man fired the shot after sunset, which is the legal limit to hunt deer.

The man is cooperating with deputies and, at this time, no charges have been filed.
