Fisherman hooks man in water, rescues him off Unity Island

Posted

One man was taken to Erie County Medical Center, overnight Monday, after he was rescued from the water around Unity Island.

It was an alert fisherman who found the man.

That fisherman's friend called 911 around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

He said the man was floating, bobbing up and down in the river and was "out of it" when he was pulled up, onto land.

This fisherman said the guy is lucky he just held on.

"I was reeling in my line and there was a guy on the end of my line. He was a foot and a half under water and I threw my pole down and grabbed my net... started yelling and screaming," Jamie Gillingham said.  "I thought I had another walleye on, and it ended up being a guy at the end and I couldn't beleive it."

AMR took the man to the hospital.  It does not appear he was seriously hurt.

We've reached out to Buffalo police to find out how he wound up in the water.
