Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a "large outside fire" Friday at 4:20 p.m. on East River Road and Winkle Drive.
According to officials, a lawnmower suddenly burst into flames when a homeowner was clearing his property of some heavy marsh grass.
As a result, a grass fire spread to approximately 10 feet by 30 feet of the property, the Assistant Fire Chief said.
Crews on the scene were able to put the fire out within 20 minutes of arriving. No structure was involved and damage to the mower is estimated at $1,000.
