BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — It started with a drawing. 7-year-old Riley Lewandowski designed a Buffalo Sabres beanie. With some help, that hat has become the limited edition Cap of Hope. A portion of the proceeds from every hat sold will be donated to Roswell Park to support cancer research and patient care.
"I designed it," said Lewandowski, "to pass out to kids."
Brian Gionta and Lewandowski handed the knit hats out to patients at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"It's pretty cool that a little girl, a 7-year-old helped design it and be a part of it and see it come to where it is now," Gionta said, "You see the struggles a lot of people and a lot of families go through. To come here and kind of let them forget about it for a little bit, hopefully we've done our job. But the main thing is to let people know that we are in the fight and the struggle with them. We support them along the way."
The hat is being sold at the Buffalo Sabres New Era Store at KeyBank Center and all Buffalo area Wegmans locations while supplies last.
"Every dollar that's spent on research, it leads to something," said Dr. Sarbajit Mukherjee, an oncologist at Roswell.
