MAYVILLE, N.Y. (WKBW) — A devastating fire at a popular Southern Tier diner destroyed the longstanding restaurant.

“When I heard the whistle go off and the tone say ‘smoke at the Mayville diner’ my heart sunk,” said Tabitha Say, who grew up going to the diner.

Say's mother worked at the diner for 17 years as a waitress.

“I was shocked at first I couldn’t do anything but stand there and stare because I was like this couldn’t be happening,” said Say.

Firefighters from six different departments were still on scene as of 5:30, Tuesday morning. Captain Richard Telford says the building's metal roof lead to problems putting the fire out.

Authorities tell us an investigation has begun to determine a cause. Telford says the investigation could take several days, possibly weeks.
