Multiple crews investigating explosion and heavy fire in Albion

ALBION, N.Y. (WKBW) — Several crews are looking into what caused an explosion which led to a heavy fire at a home in Albion, Saturday afternoon.

The Village of Albion Police Department says the Orleans County 911 Center received numerous calls regarding what sounded like and explosion and a fire at a home on West State Street around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials say the initial investigation reveals that the fire started in a detached garage on 221 West State Street, and because of the reports of an explosion, Bomb Squad Technicians were brought in to make sure the scene was safe.

Police, fire crews, and sheriff's deputies all responded to the scene where the fire spread to another home on West State Street and a home on East Academy Street.

A man at one of the homes on West State Street was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester to be treated for non-life threatening injuries due to the explosion and subsequent fire.

Officials say there is no further risk for another explosion.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire which caused extensive damage to homes on West State Street and East Academy Street.
