Bob Berkman has been playing the piano his whole life. He got hooked on it because his grandparents had a player piano and in his words "I thought it was the neatest thing there was and I still do".
A player piano is also known as "Pianola". They started appearing over a century ago. Bob says that back in the day they filled an entertainment void. Bob's business is Pianola Enterprises. He travels around sharing the history of the instrument and giving concerts. Bob says"people enjoy it. I have never had a disappointed audience."
Bob says you can let the player piano play itself but it sounds much better if the operator uses the foot pedals to control the volume and the hand controls. The piano rolls make the whole thing work. Bob worked for QRS Piano Roll Manufacturing for over thirty years and he still creates their annual Christmas roll.
