The Lockport City School District is confirming a person within the district has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, an inflammation of brain and spinal cord tissue usually caused by an infection.

This particular form of meningitis is not contagious and has not put any other students or staff at risk, the district said.

The district says parents of students at Charles Upson Elementary School were notified of the case.

The district is not disclosing whether the patient is a student or staff member.

An open house at the school, planned for Thursday evening, was canceled as a precaution. It will be rescheduled.
