Researchers at the University of Buffalo have been awarded $7 million to find an effective way to treat drug users with the hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis C is often spread among drug users who share needles.

Researchers say even when receiving treatment for opioids, patients often fail to seek treatment for HCV because they are often suffering from other medical conditions, including depression and anxiety.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HCV killed a record 20,000 Americans in 2014.
