A Williamsville man has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident after one person died and four others were injured when a pickup truck rolled over on the property of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport Wednesday night.
Lawrence Penna was charged with the Class D felony Thursday morning in Town of Cheektowaga Court. Prosecutors say he was involved in an accident that caused the pickup truck to rollover around 11:45 P.M.
According to prosecutors, surveillance video shows Penna getting out of his car after the accident to look at the rolled over pickup truck, before driving around the airport parking lot to pick up family members. Prosecutors say Penna drove past the accident again as he left the airport.
Chief George Gast with the NFTA said speed appeared to be a contributing factor to the crash and more information will be made clear as the investigation continues.
"We anticipate additional charges will be placed against the driver of the pickup truck which rolled over," Gast said. He said the decision to place charges is ultimately up to the district attorney.
A felony hearing is scheduled for Penna next Wednesday in Town of Cheektowaga Court.
