Posted

A season's worth of hard work and dedication all came down to one 45-minute game between 2nd-seeded Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore and 4th-seeded Kenmore/Grand Island for the Girls Hockey Section VI Championship.

After a close game all the way through, Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore pulled away in the third period to win 3-2, giving them the title for the 2016-2017 season.

It was quiet early on, with Orchard Park dominating the puck for much of the period, but they couldn't get one past the stonewall efforts of Kenmore goaltender Ellie Simmons.

The nerves were cast aside in the second period, as Olivia Smith helped Kenmore get the breakthrough goal to put them up 1-0. Orchard Park quickly answered back just moments later with a goal by Tori Fadeley. The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into the third and final period.

That's when Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore really established their dominance, putting up two goals in a matter of minutes to give them a 3-1 lead late in the game. The goals were scored by Jessica Peters and Mary Kromer.

Kenmore/Grand Island gave one last effort at trying to force an overtime, with Hannah Gallivan scoring a highlight reel goal with under two minutes to play to make it 3-2. Kenmore pulled their goaltender, but couldn't push another one past, giving Orchard Park the victory.
