Former Buffalo Sabres star Dale Hawerchuk dies following cancer battle

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Former Buffalo Sabres great and Hockey Hall of Fame member Dale Hawerchuk died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. The Toronto, ON native was 57-years-old.

Dale's son, Eric, tweeted Tuesday "after an incredibly brave and difficult battle with cancer, our dad has passed away. My family is so proud of him and the way he fought."

Hawerchuk spent five seasons with the Sabres from 1990-1995. Hawerchuk was inducted into Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Sabres issued a statement saying in part "The Buffalo Sabres are saddened to hear of the tragic loss of one of the team's all-time greats, Dale Hawerchuk."

During his career, Hawerchuk scored 518 goals and recorded 1,409 points. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
