BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Trying to make a playoff push, the Buffalo Sabres just can't seem to find consistency when they need it the most as they fell to the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Sunday evening. With the loss, the Sabres are now 28-23-7 overall with 63 points.
After a scoreless twenty-minutes, the Sabres found themselves trailing less than eight minutes into the second period when Miles Wood notched the game's first goal for a 1-0 Devils lead. Six minutes later, Jesper Bratt connected on the Devils power play as they went up by two goals. The Sabres, though, found some life with less than a minute to go in the second period when Sam Reinhart scored his 14th of the season to cut the deficit in half heading into the final twenty minutes.
In the third period, the Devils added two more goals including a shorthanded empty-netter to seal the win.
Carter Hutton started in net for the Sabres and stopped 20 of 23 shots.
The Sabres will head to Florida for two games later this week. They play the Florida Panthers on Tuesday and wrap things up at Tampa Bay on Thursday. They return home to KeyBank Center on Saturday afternoon when they host the Washington Capitals.
