and last updated

June is Healthy Home Month. Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein has some healthy home tips.

Look to see what repairs need to be made like the roof, ceiling, walls, electricity, plumbing, etc.

Also check to see what improvements can be done to make sure your home is safe and help people avoid slips and falls.

Make sure your smoke detectors are working. Be sure to replace your batteries twice a year. there are actually newer smoke detectors that have batteries with a ten-year life.

Be sure to put tools that can cause fires like lighters, matches and candles are out of reach of children. Also have at least one working fire extinguisher in the home and that the older children and adults know how to use it.

Make sure chemicals like bleaches and other toxic materials are locked up.

Keep your home safe in terms of medication and hazardous waste around the home. Keep medications locked and out of reach of children. If you have expired prescriptions, there are kiosks around Erie County where you can safely dispose of your drugs. For locations and more information, you can go to their website.
