It’s time to announce MotorTrend’s Car of the Year for 2021. Editor-in-Chief Mark Rechtin says in order for a car to be considered, it has to be brand new or significantly redesigned for the 2021 model year. That meant there were 18 models, with three variants, based on body shape, power train etc for them to test over a two-week period both on a closed course at a testing location and then in the real world. He says it’s really hard to compare the $25,000 Nissan against a $200,000 Porsche so they don’t. They run them through six key criteria that allows them to evaluate each vehicle based on its own merits. Those criteria are safety, efficiency, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence and performance with intended function. Rechtin says there was one that really stood head and shoulders above the rest.
