Jay Hall has been receiving a lot of contact from students, moms and dads and homework helpers regarding mathematics.
Mathematics seems very difficult these days. The problems 3rd and 4th graders work on seem like the problems we worked on in the 7th and 8th grade. It’s difficult but Jay Hall has something that can help. It’s called Academic vocabulary.
Academic vocabulary basically means words that are traditionally used in academics such as in the math lesson and the math text your working with at home.
These are words that are not common in normal everyday conversation, so when you see them your really need to know them especially in math.
The good news is that New York State has produced a glossary of math verbs. There are 37 verbs that your child must know to master things like state assessments where they show up such as the word determine. It was #41 on last year’s assessment. Jay Hall shows us how to master these words in mathematics.
