Dr. Nicole Ferguson, author of Unstoppable Joy, says her favorite mindfulness exercise is grounding. She says it helps her whenever she is feeling anxious, or on the verge of a panic attack or just needs a quick break from her thoughts. She says it is so helpful when it comes to relaxing and engaging the senses.
What you do is scan the room. Find five things you can see and be sure to describe them. Find four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you remember tasting. Dr. Ferguson says she likes to modify this exercise. She scans the room and looks for things of a particular color. For example, she might scan the room looking for all things green or locate every item that is blue or anything that is red. Dr. Ferguson says to be sure to try it out and see if it works for you.
