YOUNGSTOWN, NY — Derek Schultz has a long way to travel to get to work-about two hundred years back in time. Derek is a costumed historic interpreter at Old Fort Niagara. Today he is decked out for 1812.

According to Derek "I've been doing this about eleven years, two years past the average enlistment period of the American soldier."

He's has a number of different costumes and Derek says "For me, there are about six different uniforms and six different interpretations."

There are a handful of full-time, year round historic interpreters who make it their mission to bring history to life at Old Fort Niagara.
