An 11-year-old girl from North Collins was killed Saturday in an accident involving a car and a dirt bike.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office says Sydney Sidote was trying to cross New Oregon Road at around 6 p.m. Saturday. The dirt bike hit the passenger side of the vehicle.
Deputies tell 7 Eyewitness News Sidote was wearing a helmet and other protective gear at the time of the accident.
"All the safety precautions were there and it wasn't for lack of equipment," Chief of Patrol Scott Joslyn explained. "This was just an absolute horrible, horrific accident. I can't imagine what the family is going through."
According to the sheriff's office, Sidote was a student at Eden Central Schools.
The driver was a local woman in her 60s and had three passengers in the car. No one in the car was injured and the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
Sidote was originally transported by ambulance to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital. She was later transported by Mercy Flight to the John Oishei Children's Hospital.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help with expenses.
