As the end of winter approaches, AAA reports millions of Americans will likely cash out for vehicle repairs due to rust damage caused by road de-icers.
According to a new survey, 70 percent of U.S. drivers are at risk for costly repairs. Over the past 5 years, AAA reports drivers paid an estimated $3 billion dollars annually in rust repairs.
Over the years, many state and local transportation departments have switched to using liquid de-icers as a more effective and timely solution to treating winter roadways - but at a cost.
Newer alternatives, though more effective than traditional salt, have proven more damaging to vehicles given the degree of chemicals involved. With additional chemicals, comes additional corrosion, which leads to more damage and more repairs.
AAA says, the best way to care for your vehicle moving into the warmer season is to get car washes more frequently, avoid driving directly before or after winter storms and repair any pre-existing damage that could get worse.
