HAMBURG, N.Y. (WKBW) — Wind and water teamed up for a damaging night in Western New York.
The Outer Harbor was no match for the rising water. Waves crashed on top of parking lots. People hoping to get a close look, got a really close look when water rushed around their cars.
The winds gusting over 60mph pushed water up the Buffalo River into the Old First Ward Neighborhood. South Street was covered. The area was closed off.
Along Route 5 in Lackawanna, a billboard was knocked over in the gusts. It landed on the Mobil gas station. No one was hurt.
Further south along the shore in Hamburg, the waves bombarded the unprotected Hoover Beach with surf. The neighborhood was placed under a voluntary evacuation.
Hamburg Water Rescue was called into save a dog that was in a home surrounded by water.
Neighbors at Hoover Beach fear this storm may very well end up being more damaging than storms in the past, like last year's windstorm on Halloween.
“We really do need help down here. We need to get something moving forward because we're going to end up losing half the neighborhood,” said Carl Dinezza, a Hoover Beach Resident.
Despite the storm packing a punch, there were no reported injuries.
