Body armor experts caution about bullet proof backpacks

Buffalo Armory LLC is seeing a huge demand for its body amor products to protect police and EMS crews from a high-powered rifle shot.  Using a special technique to make lighter-weight steel body armor that can stop high-velocity rifle rounds, the company has seen sales of its "Active Shooter Kits" soar.  They are made in Buffalo but not sold to the public.

However, the company is aware of so-called bullet proof backpacks that are being marketed across the country.  The backpacks can cost $300 and sales have soared after the Florida high school massacre.

While the lightly protected backpacks might stop a pistol shot, Buffalo Armory said they will definitely not stop a high-velocity rifle round, like those fired from an AR-15 or AK-47.

Instead, Buffalo Armory believes keeping kids safe from an active shooter needs to focus on creating layers of security in a school - including the creation of safe zones with bullet proof doors in classrooms.

The company is now looking at expanding its product to included armored doors for schools.
