York, Pennsylvania-based Bon-Ton has identified the 42 stores that will close this year as the company shrinks its footprint in an increasingly competitive retail market.
None of Bon-Ton's six locations in Western New York are on the closing list released by the struggling department store chain late Wednesday.
The closest location to Buffalo that will go dark is in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Liquidation sales will begin Thursday and continue for 10 to 12 weeks. Associates will be offered opportunities to interview at other locations, the company said.
"As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan announced in November, we are taking the next step in our effort to move forward with a more productive store footprint," said Bon-Ton President and CEO Bill Tracy. "We remain focused on executing our key initiatives to drive improved performance in an effort to strengthen our capital structure to support the business going forward."
The closings announced today are in addition to the closing of five other locations previously announced by the company.
