Buffalo Councilman wants DEC to clean up site of former American Axle plant

The American Axle GM Plant on East Delavan Avenue closed their doors in 2009, but toxins from an earlier oil spill are still proving trouble for the east side community.

Masten District Council Member Ulysees Wingo says he's drafted a resolution urging the DEC to clean nearly three acres out of 70 now owned by East Delavan Properties.

"I'm concerned because of the health risks that is posses to the residents who live around the area," Wingo said.

A spokesman for the site's current owner says for more than 25 years, they've fought an uphill battle dealing lingering toxins and containments linked to American Axle.

The spokesman for the site's current owner says he too wants to work the DEC to clean up the area.

Both parties say they're at a crossroads with the state agency. The DEC says the current owner must go through the proper steps to get funding.
