Buffalo native Jake Halpern won the Pulitzer Prize for his graphic narrative about the real-life struggles of a refugee family in the USA.

Halpern, a freelance writer, won the Pulitzer alongside cartoonist Michael Sloan.  Their New York Times series Welcome to the New World chronicled the daily struggles of the refugee family.

Halpern is a 1993 graduate of City Honors School.  According to his biography, his most recent nonfiction book Bad Paper was excerpted as a cover story for the New York Times Magazine. It was chosen as an Amazon "Book of the Year" and was a New York Times bestseller.

7 Eyewitness interviewed Halpern in July 2007 (pictured about) about his 2007 book Fame Junkies.
