City may use tourism fund for Guitar Drop

Should the City of Niagara Falls donate money to the Hard Rock Café’s annual Guitar Drop?

Council members are expected to vote on that issue during a special meeting on Friday. The mayor is asking the city to contribute $10,000 to help offset costs.

This is not the first time he’s asked the council to contribute. The money would come from the city’s tourism fund.

Several councilmembers have expressed concern about authorizing public money for an event put on by a private company, especially when the city is struggling with a budget that originally called for tax increases and layoffs in 2015.

The council is also being asked to consider hiring four part-time plow operators for the remainder of the winter months.

The mayor proposes using $41,000 from the tourism fund balance to pay the workers.
