AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — As Western New York experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases, Elderwood is turning one of its facilities into a COVID-only care center.
Elderwood at Amherst, which has 92 beds, will care for residents from other local Elderwood facilities who have tested positive for COVID-19.
In a press release, a spokesperson for Elderwood said the designation as a COVID-only facility will allow all Elderwood senior care facilities to follow isolation protocols more efficiently.
People currently living at Elderwood at Amherst who have never tested positive for COVID-19 will be transferred to other Elderwood facilities.
Two of the facility's three units will be turned into COVID-only units in the first phase of this switchover. The third will be prepared to become COVID-only to meet demand if needed.
Elderwood is also hiring in anticipation of needed more staff at the Amherst location.
