Tax returns released by Cynthia Nixon, who's seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in New York, show she and her wife made nearly $2 million dollars in 2017.

The large part of the family's income came from investments and royalties. Nixon's wife, Christine Marinoni, left her job in New York City government this year.

The returns also showed the couple gave about $53,000 to to a variety of environmental, education, arts and children's charities. They also donated to homeless shelters and a public library.

Nixon's Democratic primary opponent, two-term incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo, released his tax returns last month. Cuomo's federal return listed $212,000 in income, including investments and his $179,000 salary. He also donated $11,000 to HELP USA, a charity he founded years ago to fight homelessness.
