An Erie County Sheriff's Deputy who saw smoke while he was driving by a home stopped to help put out a fire and evacuate the homeowners.

Police say Deputy Gary Mosier was driving along Old Lake Shore Road in the Village of Angola Saturday when he saw the smoke.  When he pulled into the drive way, he saw that a truck engine was on fire.  The deputy grabbed his fire extinguisher and tried to put the flames out, but the fire was too large.  The deputy then helped the elderly homeowners evacuate the house.

The Lake Erie Volunteer Fire Company and Evans Police Department responded.  The fire caused extensive damage to the garage and limited damage to the house.  First responders say if the deputy had not tried to extinguish the fire, the damage could have been worse.

A 1969 and 1965 Ford Mustang were damaged in the fire, along with a 1977 Chevy pickup truck.
