The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) says 2,600 pounds of drugs were collected during the drug drop-off event Monday, December 5.
The ECDOH collaborated with Environmental Planning and the Sheriff's Office for the event.
Both prescription and over the counter drugs, pills and other solids, like patches, as well as liquids, needles or other "sharps" were accepted at the Erie County Emergency Services Training and Operations Center in Cheektowaga.
All drugs and items were accepted with no questions asked and were safely burned at Covanta Niagara in Niagara Falls the following day.
Another drug drop-off event will be held in early 2017. Medications and sharps can also be safely thrown out year-round using the kiosks that are part of the Extended Syringe Access Program ("ESAP") and Medication Disposal sites.
