The Buffalo Fire Department fought a large fire in a former Roman Catholic church rectory late Monday night.
The fire broke out just before 11:30 p.m. at 65 Watson Street near Clinton Street. Heavy fire was shooting from the attic of the vacant three-story building when firefighters arrived.
Crews fought the fire defensively using ladder trucks. No one was reported hurt and damage to the structure was said to be $100,000.
The building is the former rectory for Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
The church was closed by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo in 1973. It was owned briefly by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and in 1988, Witness Cathedral of Faith purchased the property. It was bought in 2015 by a private owner in 2015 and has sat vacant.
It does not appear that the church building was damaged by the fire.
