and last updated

Elmwood Avenue is closed from West Utica to Hodge after a three-alarm fire in Buffalo's Elmwood Village.

The Buffalo Fire Department says 120 firefighters were called to 505 Elmwood Avenue around 4:00 Monday morning.  Neighbors inside the building told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Thuy Lan Nguyen they heard the smoke alarm going off and ran outside.  They say the stairwells were filled with smoke as they were running out.

We're told two people were taken to ECMC for evaluation. Firefighters say the fire appears to have been caused by careless smoking. The fire and smoke caused about $500,000 in damage. Two people are being helped by the Salvation Army.
