April is Autism Awareness Month and a nature trail is being proposed in Letchworth State Park for those on the autism spectrum.
The first of its kind, the Autism Nature Trail will be a one and a quarter mile trail just behind the Humphrey Nature Center. It's tailored towards autistic individuals by including stone markers, a sensory station and a meadow run.
"Outdoor recreational activities really aren't available for this population," said project co-chair Gail Serventi. "We want this trail to be something that is welcoming and embracing."
The steering committee has raised about $1 million so far, but need another three million to make the Autism Nature Trail a reality.
