Former NY state Senate leader gets prison

Posted

Former New York state Senate leader Dean Skelos has been sentenced to 4 years and 3 months in prison after his conviction on public corruption charges.

Judge Kimba Wood announced the penalty for the longtime Republican powerbroker on Wednesday.

Skelos and his son Adam were convicted in July for a second time on charges of extortion, wire fraud and bribery. Their first convictions were rejected on appeal after the U.S. Supreme Court narrowed public corruption law.

Prosecutors had urged at least 6½ years in prison for the 70-year-old grandfather while his lawyers said he should get no more than two years.

His son is scheduled for sentencing on Wednesday afternoon.

Lawyers said the strain of two trials had caused a rift between the elder Skelos and his son.
