Niagara SPCA says yesterday began like any other day until retired Army Veteran, Officer Robert Nowakowski, wrote a $50,000 check to the SPCA.

"I am getting old. Family I don't have much left... and I've been able to save money over the years," Nowakowski said.

According to Niagara SPCA's Facebook page, the dog lover offered the check to go toward a new heating and ventilation system for the dog kennels.

"We knew our ventilation system needed a serious upgrade," according to the post.

The Niagara SPCA became a No-Kill animal shelter in 2012 and the amount of dogs in the facility could not handle the air exchanges.

The shelter became a No-Kill facility in 2012 and the intake of animals has tripled.

"We are over the moon! His generosity will help serve thousands and thousands of animals in the coming years," according to the post.

Nowakowski adopted a black lab named 'Chip' in 2004 from the Niagara SPCA. Chip passed away in 2013 but he still gets his dog fix by visiting the shelter and handing out treats once a week.
