Today is a day to celebrate a Western New York delicacy-- it is National Sponge Candy Day! The confection was created back in 1910 and Fowlers claims to be the first place to have the sponge candy.
Ted Marks, the Owner and President of Fowlers Chocolates played a part in making National Sponge Candy Day. He met with Mayor Byron Brown and established the national holiday four years ago.
Marks credits the success of the candy to people loving Buffalo specialties. He wanted the holiday to be in September to kick-start the candy making season for the holidays.
"We have seen a growth in Buffalo centric things," Marks said. "It's always been our best selling product."
Fowlers has six locations around Western New York.
