Studies show that obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese adults, but a new family weight loss program by researchers at he University at Buffalo is looking to treat the entire family.
The study, led by Leonard Epstein, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, uses an $8.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to make family focused weight-loss programs accessible available to everyday families.
By focusing on the dietary needs, physical activity and lifestyles of both parents and children researchers are finding both parties are benefitting.
"At our very last study, 50% of the kids that started off overweight were normal weight 10 years later," Epstein told 7 Eyewitness News.
