How to make the most of your tank of gas

Posted

Gas prices in Buffalo are on average six cents more expensive on September 1 than they were on August 31. And with the long holiday weekend here, travelers are looking for ways to stretch their fuel.

Elizabeth Carey from AAA of Western and Central New York says there are four key ways to stretch that tank of fuel. The first is checking air pressure in your tires; filling your tires to the suggested PSI marked on the inside of the driver's side door will maximize your fuel mileage.

Also, regular checks of your air filter and engine are good for your gas mileage. If your engine runs smoothly and is not exerting too much energy into bringing in cool air, it will use less gas while on the road.

Lastly, use cruise control while on the highway. Avoiding slowing down and having to accelerate back up to speed will save fuel at higher speeds; cruise control minimizes engine output while maintaining your comfortable cruising speed.
