BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Looking to go for a walk on Bird Island Pier? Well you might be cut off under the Peace Bridge as $75,000 in repairs are needed to fix the current walkway, which was left in need of much repair following ice issues this past winter.

"We haven't seen something like this in many years" Department of Public Works commissioner Michael Finn said.

The repairs are needed in the railings that keep people off the rocks as they walk along the pier. Typically, a few railings need repairs, but the amount needed has left the second half of the pier closed for the summer as a few months of construction is needed.

"The whole system got pretty mangled by the ice that overflowed during the winter" Finn said.

Half of the pier is currently open to the public up until the Peace Bridge, which is the part being repaired. Construction is expected to finish by the fall as they prepare to reopen the pier summer of 2020.
