BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — With temperatures expected in the 90's this weekend, Western New York will be caught in a massive heatwave. It's something that many are not prepared for, so here is a complete guide to handling the heat according to the Ready Campaign (a government run organization designated to educate the public).
Do's
- Find air conditioning
- Watch for heat illness
- Check on family members and neighbors
- Drink plenty of fluids
Don'ts
- Partake in strenuous activities
- Wear heavy clothing
- Leave people or pets in a closed car
- Use an electronic fan (fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature)
Preparing your home for the heat
- Cover windows with drapes or shades
- Weather-strip doors and windows
- Use window reflectors such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard to reflect heat out
- Add insulation
- Use attic fans to clear hot air
- Install window air conditioners and insulate around them
Staying safe during the heat wave
- Find cooling locations in your area (WKBW has them all listed here)
- Never leave any living being in a vehicle
- If outside, find shade
- Wear a hat wide enough to block out the sun
- Drink plenty of fluids
Feeling dehydrated or fatigue from the heat?
- Go to a cooler location
- Remove excess clothing
- Take sips, not gulps of water or sports drinks with salt and sugar
- If body temperature gets above 103 degrees, call 911 or get the person to a hospital immediately.
