BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A cheerful goodbye from nurses at Oishei Children's Hospital as Mikey Barone left the hospital for the first time ever.
The toddler born in August 2017 has called the hospital home for 572 days. Mikey weighted just over a pound when he was first born and has had countless surgeries since. For several months he has been ready to go home but hasn't been able to because of a shortage of home nurses.
The Barone family says they were able to hire nurses with the help of social media and coverage of the issue from 7 Eyewitness News. The family adds that is was a surreal moment that brought tears to their eyes when they were finally able to bring their son home this past Tuesday.
Parents Mike and Kristine Barone moved their son into Mike's parents house in Amherst. They family will move to their West Seneca home once they feel more comfortable and have a set schedule with the home nurses. Mikey does not have any new surgeries scheduled for the near future and the family is focused on helping him grow bigger and stronger.
Sweet Buffalo has set up a GoFundMe for the boy to help his parents with medical bills.
