BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — As thousands of college graduates look for their first job out of school, career service centers are giving their advice as to the best industries for them.
"Education, teaching, finance, the banking, finance, insurance, hospitality, the tech fields, our tech companies locally are just doing great," Stephanie Zuckerman-Avilas, the director of career service centers at SUNY Buffalo, said.
Here are the average entry-level salaries for those positions according to salary.com:
- Education - $54,400
- Banking - $60,000
- Hospitality - $35,800
- Insurance - $47,200
It's important to note that those jobs have varying pays dependent on the exact title, city, and other skills a candidate may have. 7 Eyewitness News tried to compile the most average salary for those positions.
Unlike previous years, it's a good time to be a college graduate.
"Within a 50 mile radius of buffalo there are over 5000 full-time jobs available," Dr. Anne-Marie Dobies, the interim Vice President of Student Affairs at Canisius College, said.
According to Dr. Dobies, some of the hottest job markets are, "banking, medical components, and human services."
Even if a graduate majored in something they don't get a job in, or they want to make a change, soft skills are increasingly more important.
"But a sociology degree and a psychology degree can also go into the business world. It can also... there tech companies cause they have the soft skills. (Sociology and Psychology majors) are communicators. They have the problem solving skills," Zuckerman-Avilas, said.
The standard 9-5 suit and tie job isn't for everyone, though. If you want to be an artist go for it. The most important thing that the experts said is to follow your heart.
"People have to find out what they are passionate about," Zuckerman-Avilas said.
