LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WKBW) — Gyms and salons can reopen in New York State's Orange Zones. Most of Erie County is in an orange zone.
For people looking to get back into the gym, this announcement couldn't come soon enough.
Marcos Vargas is a boxer in Lackawanna. The heavyweight fighter hasn't had a fight in a year. He still doesn't know when his next fight will be. But starting Monday, he can go back to his gym, Lackawanna Boxing.
"You don't have that environment around you. You don't have your coach sometimes, that sparring. Stuff like that affects you. You don't spar for three months. And you go in there and you spar. You're going to be off," explained Vargas.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that gyms and salons in Orange Zones can reopen.
According to the data, hair salons, barbershops and personal care are responsible for just 0.14% of spread and gyms are responsible for just 0.06% of the spread.
Cuomo says gyms and salons can reopen in Orange Zones with 25% capacity and weekly testing because they are no longer the problem they were before.
