ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) — Those recovering from COVID-19 will soon have a place to get continued care. Catholic Health is re-opening a nursing home in Orchard Park and converting it into the St. Joseph's Post-Acute care facility, announced Tuesday.

“I think everyone’s working together for this collaboration and it’s really a great feeling and exciting for the patients because they’re going to get excellent care,”
Dr. Kristen Robillard, MD, who will be the Medical Director.

Formerly AbsolutCare Nursing Home, this building will be the first of its kind in Western New York to offer short term rehabilitation and skilled nursing care for COVID-19 patients coming from Catholic Health hospitals. This comes after a surge of patients at hospitals and not enough beds.

“These individuals are staying longer in the hospital than they necessarily need to be, ultimately backing up the beds for new patients that are coming in,” said Joyce Markiewicz, Executive Vice President and Chief Business Development Officer for Catholic Health.

There will be 80 beds for those who are discharged from the hospital, but not ready to return home. Dr. Robillard expects many patients to be in the older, at risk population. All will be positive for COVID-19.

“I think everyone’s working together for this collaboration and it’s really a great feeling and exciting for the patients because they’re going to get excellent care,” said Dr. Robillard about the effort with the McGuire Group.

In order to keep healthcare workers safe, there is a color-coded system. Red zones are for patients and healthcare workers with protective equipment. Yellow zones are for hand-offs. Green zones are safe areas for healthcare workers only.

Most patients will be there for around 21 days, depending on how well they recover. Patients will come from Catholic Health facilities or from McGuire Group facilities, whether they're insured or not.

It set to open on April 14 at 4659 Duerr Road, Orchard Park, NY.
