LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) — Catholic Health has reached a deal to buy 104 acres of land off South Transit Road in Lockport to construct a new hospital campus.
The facility will be called Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. Catholic Health plans to begin construction on the facility in the fall of this year, although the plan is still under environmental and zoning review. The land sits between Ruhlmann Road and Shimer Drive and is being acquired in parcels from multiple owners, including Hall's Apple Farm. The operators of the farm will keep a portion of the land and continue to operate the farm's market and bakery on Ruhlmann Road.
Catholic Health says the facility will have an entrance on Shimer Drive, near the Home Depot plaza. Foxwood Place Apartments is also near the site.
The campus will include an emergency department and inpatient hospital beds. Catholic Health says it is working with state and local officials to get necessary approvals to start construction in the fall.
There is currently one hospital in Lockport, Eastern Niagara Hospital, which serves residents in Lockport and the surrounding area. ENH filed for bankruptcy in November 2019, a few months after closing its Newfane campus. Since filing for bankruptcy, it has cut 80 positions from its Lockport facility.
Catholic Health operates hospitals and healthcare centers throughout Western New York. In addition to Mount St. Mary's Hospital, it also operates Kenmore Mercy, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, and Sisters of Charity Hospital.
