BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A dog rescue group in Buffalo recently took part in what was its biggest rescue operation to date. Buffalo Pug and Small Breed Rescue helped save almost 60 dogs from puppy mills in Ohio.
Eight volunteers from the group made the drive in mid-May. They filled five vans with 58 puppies.
"We left early Friday morning, drove out there, we stopped at a bunch of different farms," explained Vanessa Gillette, who volunteers with the organization. "We stayed overnight there, then the next day we went to a couple more farms."
For those dogs taken from the puppy mills, the trip to Western New York was literally the difference between life and death.
"If they can't find a rescue for them, they'll just kill them," explained Deb Bodenschatz, who works with the Puppy Mill Rescue Team. "To date we have never left a dog behind."
Right now, the dogs are in the care of foster families. A few of them have permanent homes lined up already, but many still need to be adopted. The group has dogs of all different ages, breeds, and abilities.
"Many of them come with a wide variety of conditions. Because of the breeding," said Gillette. "They don't breed for genetics, they breed to pump them out, and if they can make any money, that's fine."
